Punting in Oxford

Posted on

I have spent many fun weekends with my Blog 'n' Bake friends this summer, picnicking in Hampstead Heath, picking berries at the farm or selling cakes at Street Feast. Another one of our adventures was punting in Oxford.

A punt is a flat-bottomed boat used in small rivers; the punter stands on the square-cut side of the punt and propels it by pushing a pole against the river bed. It seems easy, but it proved quite difficult and tiring, as well as requiring a very good sense of balance. Not that I would know...I didn't even try!

Punting is a popular leisure activity in England, especially in Oxford, where most of the punting is done on the River Cherwell.

We met at Cherwell Boat House on a Saturday morning and hired a 6-seat punt for the day. After about half an hour of going zig zag and hitting the river bank (punting in a straight line is not as easy as it looks...), we arrived at the Victoria Arms pub, where we stopped for Pimm's and fish & chips.

We didn't carry our D-SLR cameras as there was a slight chance we might fall into the river, so instead we carried cheaper film cameras: Sam had his Fujifilm Instax while Wendy and I used our Lomo cameras.

I have finally developed my roll of 35mm film this week, so I can share my favourite prints from the day with you!

After a few hours of eating, drinking and resting at the pub, we went back to the river for our journey back to the boat house.

The boys took turns at the helm, while us girls just sat back and enjoyed the view.

Sam's and Hannah's adorable French bulldog, Eggs Benedict, seemed to also enjoy the ride! :)

Thanks Sam & Hannah for suggesting this fun adventure! More of these to come for the Blog 'n' Bake collective, I hope!

PS: I wrote about my love for lomography last year when I posted photos of my travels in India.
